What is the top skill a social media manager needs?
The top skill social media managers need is __________. I’ve heard this sentence finished a number of different ways over the years:
– Various coding languages
– Content Management Systems (CMS) like Hootsuite, Spredfast, Tweetdeck, Sprout Social
– Graphic Design skills like Photoshop
All are incorrect. There is one skill above all that every good social media manager needs to possess. This video describes a real-life situation of it at play.
Amidst all the negativity online, it can be hard to keep your head straight trying to do right by your brand. If you’re hiring for a social media manager, or you’re an aspiring digital marketing professional, there are a number of things you can do to up your game, and you don’t need a formal opportunity to get started right now.
Jerry Seinfeld talks about the desire to succeed with a great anecdote about his co-star Michael Richards (Kramer) who once performed and had a budding fan come up to him. “I’m debating getting into acting – do you think I can make it?”
Michael responded “If you’re thinking about it, you will absolutely not make it”.
What he meant of course was that those who are truly passionate don’t wait for permission before they activate, and that applies to all facets of life. I got my start as a blogger on a dinky little Blogspot site that I created, and then a forum moderator for Nintendo. Social media in the formal sense didn’t even exist then – but it was this experience that set me apart from the rest when I went to my first interview (when you’d assume that the playing field was the most ‘level’ in terms of experience, that it’s ever been). Don’t wait for permission – start now, then learn to adapt.
